"Women Leaders Today" Keynote Speaker & Leadership Panelist Pat Evans, Director, International Project for Nonprofit Leadership University of New Orleans Pat Evans worked in Eastern Europe (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) where her primary responsibilities were community building and the development of the nonprofit sector as European Director of the US-Baltic Foundation. She worked in Sarajevo, working with nonprofits throughout Bosnia (Serbs, Croats and Muslims), to develop a plan for the rebuilding of communities, by creating a ited public identity for the nonprofit (NGO) sector. Pat led a UN mission to Cyprus to develop a plan to unite nonprofits from the Greek and Turkish sides of the divided island. Pat has held executive positions in Louisiana government, a Fortune 500 company and was a documentary film producer for a major ABC-TV affiliate. Receiving national acclaim, her documentary on the Louisiana wetlands was nominated for an Emmy. As Director of the Louisiana Office of Women's Services, she passed landmark legislation in Louisiana, establishing some of the first family violence, rape crisis centers and non-traditional training programs for women in the nation. She built the office into a multi-million dollar operation, receiving national recognition for its employment and training programs for welfare recipients. She founded the Center for Women and Government at Nicholls State University in Louisiana and was lead staff person in establishing the National and Community Service in the state.
"Pressing Through Health Challenges" Featured Presenter & Leadership Panelist Hon. Nadine M. Ramsey, Chief Judge Civil District Court, Parish of New Orleans
A Fellow of the Louisiana Bar Foundation, the Honorary Chief Judge Nadine M. Ramsey, is a proponent for the rebuilding of New Orleans. Judge Ramsey will share her personal and powerful story of her close relationship with her mother who succumbed to illness and then experienced cancer herself.
Featured Presenter & Leadership Panelist Cynthia Willard-Lewis, Councilmember District E, City of New Orleans
Councilmember Cynthia Willard-Lewis serves the residents of District E and the people of the City of New Orleans. She was Louisiana State Representative for District 100 since 1993, prior to her election to the Council in October 2000. Then, as now, she is recognized as an aggressive legislator for children and for the rights of the elderly, and for her passionate and effective voice for women and the disadvantaged. In addition to her duties as a dedicated Councilmember, she is a Public Relations Consultant for Lakeland Hospital, as well as host of the "Stars Over the East" television program. A recipient of many awards, Councilmember Willard-Lewis is a member of the NAACP, SCLC, Amnesty International, National Black Caucus of State Legislators, and the National Organization of Women in Government, and serves on a host of committees. She was an honor graduate of Xavier University where she received the University's Gold Medal and Service Awards. A former Miss Black New Orleans and Miss Black Louisiana, she was first runner-up in the Miss Black America pageant.
"Possibilities for Peace" Featured Presenter & Peace Panelist Shirley Young, Military Families Speak Out & Code Pink A native of New York City, Shirley has represented Military Families Speak Out (MFSO) on the first national steering committee of the United for Peace and Justice coalition, and worked closely with many other groups’ representatives including Code Pink, September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, the American Friends Service Committee, Peace Action, and many more. Shirley co-organized a chapter of MFSO in New York City, and last spring, another in New Orleans. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Shirley was part of a delegation with Veterans For Peace who came to Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama to build alliances with local activists involved in recovery efforts. During that trip to the Gulf Coast, Shirley decided to move to New Orleans to earn a Master of Social Work degree at Tulane University. She is now happy to be a New Orleanian. Shirley believes in the principles of non-violence as taught by Gandhi and King and is working for social justice, human rights, and the abolition of war and nuclear weapons.
Peace Panelist: Jill Dubreuil Peace Activist & Artist PWI Regional Director New York-Connection
Jill Dubreuil graduated with honors from Pratt Institute in 2004. She since has exhibited artwork throughout the United States and Kenya, and has organized multiple art benefits to raise funds for Global Peace causes. Jill joined Powerful Women International in 2007 and traveled to Kenya to initiate the first international PWI Conference. She is currently achieving a Masters in Business with a certification in non-profit management at The College of Saint Rose in Albany NY and is the Regional Director for the New York-Connection for Powerful Women International.
Peace Panelist: Cathy Culver Lockheed Martin Space Systems
Cathy Culver lives in San Francisco, CA but her heart belongs to New Orleans! Cathy's projects over the last few years have been focused on the the rebuilding of New Orleans and youth. Cathy will share her vision for a New Orleans that is a vibrant community with jobs and artistic expression for all.
